You don't need a full set to meal prep. A small mix of leak-proof, freezer-safe containers plus your Eat Easier plan covers lunches, dinners and snacks for the week.

Start with a small starter set

Reuse what you have first. If buying from scratch, start with: 4x flat rectangular for mains, 2x small round for snacks/sauces, 1x large for washed greens or batch grains.

Container types compared

  • Glass with snap lids: durable, easy to see contents, good for reheating at home. Heavy to carry.
  • BPA-free plastic with locking lids: light, stackable, good for carrying. Let hot food cool before closing.
  • Stainless steel: durable for dry foods and snacks. Do not microwave.
  • Silicone bags/collapsible: space-saving for freezer and snacks. Check seal for soups.

No brand or price recommended. Choose what fits your microwave, freezer, bag and dishwasher.

Sizes and portions that work

Use 700-1000ml for full meals, 350-500ml for sides/snacks/sauces, 1.5L+ for batch components. Pack grains + protein + vegetables in the same box to match your planner servings. Map your week in the public planner.

Leak, freezer and microwave guidance

  • Leak: for soups use screw-top or locking gasket + keep upright. Test with water first.
  • Freezer: leave 2cm headspace, cool before freezing, label date/contents, freeze flat when possible.
  • Microwave: vent lid, use glass or microwave-safe plastic only, no metal, stir halfway. Follow manufacturer symbols on your own set.

Budget buying and care tips

1. Buy same footprint so lids interchange and stack.

2. Prefer sets with replacement lids available.

3. Wash and air-dry lids open to avoid smells.

4. Check seals monthly; keep 1 spare gasket routine.

5. Store nested with lids filed vertically to save space.

6. Label with tape + marker; erase after use.

7. Pair containers with one shop: plan in planner, prep grains + 2 proteins + 2 vegetables.

Storage safety

Cool cooked food within 2 hours in shallow containers, refrigerate promptly, and reheat to steaming throughout to 165°F/74°C. Fridge and freezer limits vary by dish — check Batch Cooking Freezer Storage Times and the current FoodSafety.gov food safety charts. When in doubt, throw it out.

FAQ

  • How many do I need? Start with 6-7 mixed sizes above; expand only if you prep twice weekly.
  • Glass or plastic on a budget? Keep both: glass at home, light plastic for transport.
  • Can I freeze in all containers? No — use only marked freezer-safe, leave headspace.
