Batch Cooking Cheap Healthy Meals

Cook once, eat 3-4 times. A simple batch framework, cost-per-serving check, and storage links to turn cheap staples into a real week.

If healthy eating feels expensive, batch cooking fixes the math. You buy fewer ingredients in larger packs, cook once, and reuse them in different meals. This guide gives you a repeatable cheap-batch method and shows how to map it in the Eat Easier planner.

The cheap batch framework: 1+1+2+1

Pick one from each group for 4 servings:

1 base: rice, oats, pasta, potatoes, tortillas

1 cheap protein: lentils, black beans, chickpeas, eggs, canned tuna, chicken thighs

2 vegetables: frozen mixed veg, carrots, cabbage, onions, seasonal fresh

1 sauce: tomato, yogurt-lemon, soy-garlic, olive oil + spices

Cook base + protein + veg separately, keep sauce separate. Mix differently on day 2-3 so it does not feel like leftovers.

How to check cost per serving

1. Total your receipt for batch ingredients only.

2. Divide by boxes you actually packed: Total $ / Servings = $ per serving.

3. Method example: $12 batch / 6 boxes = $2 per box.

Use the shopping list to avoid extras. For a full priced example, see College Student Meal Plan: Eat Healthy on $40 a Week (With Full Grocery List). For the under-$5 angle, browse Budget Meals.

3-day starter using Eat Easier building blocks

Use Recipes filters for vegan / keto / gluten-free if needed:

Day 1: Base + bean batch bowl + frozen veg + tomato sauce

Day 2: Same base reheated as wraps or with eggs

Day 3: Soup or fried-rice remix with remaining veg + soy-garlic

Map Day 1-3 in the planner first, then add Day 4-7 only if you ate what you packed.

Store it safely

Cool within 2 hours, pack in shallow sealed boxes, label date. Fridge vs freezer limits vary by dish - check Batch Cooking Freezer Storage Times. For general chilled-food safety rules, see FoodSafety.gov food safety charts. When in doubt, throw it out.
