The Golden Ratio
- White rice: 1:1.5 (rice to water)
- Brown rice: 1:2
- Basmati: 1:1.25
- Jasmine: 1:1.5
The Foolproof Method
1. Rinse rice until water runs clear
2. Bring water to boil with salt
3. Add rice, stir once
4. Cover with tight-fitting lid
5. Reduce to lowest heat
6. Cook 18 minutes (white) or 40 minutes (brown)
7. Remove from heat, keep covered 5 minutes
8. Fluff with fork
Common Mistakes
- Lifting the lid - Steam escapes and disrupts cooking
- Stirring - Releases starch and makes rice sticky
- Wrong ratio - Too much water = mushy rice
- Not rinsing - Excess starch causes clumping
